Mario Kart 8 Wii U Tournament

At last it is here, the first Nintendo Realm contest in a long long time. To celebrate the long wait and the new website we’re going to giving away a few prizes to the winners. If we get enough demand we may be able to stream some of the matches for people to watch.

Prizes

1. 1st Place Prize
   • Any game on the Steam store under $10
   • Nintendo Realm gold medal trophy (15 points)
2. 2nd Place Prize
   • Any game on the Steam store under $5
   • Nintendo Realm silver medal trophy (10 points)
3. 3rd Place Prize
   • Nintendo Realm bronze medal trophy (5 points)

All participants will also receive the participant's mushroom trophy.

Rules

• Site staff may participate in the contest but are ineligible to collect any prizes. In the event that a staff member finishes in the top 3 the prize will go to the next highest placed non-staff member.
• Players may choose any character they wish but the map selected should be random and the winner of each round is chosen from best of 3 races.
  
• Once the sign up deadline is reached, we will post a tournament bracket and match schedule.
  
• Contestants have 1 week from when their match gets scheduled to play their opponent before being disqualified.
• In order to be eligible for prizes, a member must have registered prior to the creation of this thread.

This sounds like an awesome idea, and I'd love to participate. But didn't Brawl's online support just get turned off last week?

Wow, I can't believe it but it looks like you are right. I can't believe that they would shut down multiplayer for these games before the next installment of the franchise has even been released. Here's a list of all the other games they stopped supporting for anyone who's interested:

I wanted to have one last Wii tourney before Mario Kart 8 came out and everything went to the Wii U but I guess we might just have to cancel that idea and turn this into a MK8 tournament.

I'm sure not too many people are still playing those games online, and these games playing online definitely wasn't still fueling unit sales.

From a business side it makes sense to just let it die rather than throw more money at it..

That is true that it likely isn't fueling new game sales but people look at how a company supports their games. Future game sales might be hampered if Nintendo earns a reputation for not supporting their games long enough. Although I guess Nintendo has never really had a strong online multi-player presence like other games have so maybe not. Also I can't imagine it costs much to keep game servers running anyways, especially if like you said, less and less people are using it.

Well I guess we are going to have to skip ahead and turn this into a MK8 tournament instead.
