BUT NOTHING 1ST-PARTY
A while back, pre E3, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata said that it was very unlikely that Nintendo was going to offer Wii U owners "Free" games--not retail--but Downloads.
Well, looks like there's been a change of heart, as even though Nintendo and Iwata don't like "Free-to-Play" games, that Wii U WILL support them. Iwata said in a recent Q&A with investors that Nintendo has designed the Wii U to take advantage of the Free-to-Play Market. And that the Wii U's Online WILL be able to support what it would take to DL these types of games.
But, don't be thinking you'll be getting 1st-Party titles this way, as Iwata said:
“I don't think that's a direction that we should go in right now.”
In a follow-up, he did clarify that there may be a Nintendo IP that will support the Free-to-Play, but that they're not sure they'll be going that direction as for now.
